Daily Connections Recap - 3/24/2020 - Your perspective

Written by Sinikka Waugh | Mar 24, 2020 9:00:24 PM

As we enter a period of renewal and change, Your Clear Next Step is committed to helping our customers make their businesses and workdays even better. We will be here to walk beside you, to listen, to connect, and to aid in your search for clarity. In doing so, we are offering a free, daily Zoom call, called Daily Connections, at 1:15pm (CDT) every weekday from 3/19/2020-5/1/2020.

These calls are a chance for us to share tips and discussion about relevant topics (working remotely, maintaining consistency in uncertain times, building relationships across geography, staying motivated, staying connected, etc) and network with each other to provide help and support during this time of change.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us today! The next call will be Wednesday, March 25th at 1:15pm (CDT). Click here to join.

On today's call...

Sinikka shared a few tips about perspective, as she reminded us that our individual perspective is not the only perspective. Further more, if we assume everyone around us shares our perspective, we will experience resistance and difficulty.

  • Tip 1 - Own your perspective. Acknowledge what you're thinking and feeling.
  • Tip 2 - Don't assume. Avoid any assumptions about another person's perspective.
  • Tip 3 - Seek to understand. Instead of telling, try asking about where they're coming from.
  • Tip 4 - Find consensus where it matters. We will never agree completely, but we can work together to agree on some things
  • Tip 5 - Avoid escalating. Emotions are high right now. Take a deep breath and remain calm.

We’ve shared more about perspectives and working with others who think differently than we do in our On-Demand Webinars, How to Juggle the People You Work With. Because of the changes COVID-19 have brought to your business and workplace, we’re offering special webinar pricingClick here to learn more.

Here were some ideas and questions tossed out and answered by group

  • Understand your perspective, and then recognize there are as many other perspectives in the (virtual) room as there are people.
  • Our perspectives lead to natural biases. We can't escape these biases, but they can take us further away from the truthOne of the best ways to counteract our biases is to entertain ideas that are the exact opposite of the biases we hold. Seeing and thinking about a different perspective is one of the best ways to counteract our biases and perspectives.
  • If coming up with a plan is one of your job responsibilities, or maybe just part of your natural response to crisis, remember to keep other people's perspectives in mind when doing so.
  • Processing another person’s perspective can take time, however when the situation is changing as fast as this one we’re experience now is, we don’t always have the luxury of time. Keep this in mind and proceed with caution.
  • It’s very possible there is a mental cost to this [Coronavirus and the response to it] that we haven't even started to think about, and I think one of those could be that as we are further away from others physically each day, we might begin to forget about their perspective.
    • This is one reason why it's so important to continue to connect with others. Check in on your co-workers, your friends, and your family.
  • When we go into crisis mode we think we have to fix it. I would recommend setting aside the mindset of fixing now. It has to be heard and understood now. We can fix it later.
