That Really Great Feeling When It All Comes Together

A good friend and fellow leader told me a story today of the rush that he felt as he watched his team come together to work towards a common good.

After months of feeling like he was the only one who wanted the goal. Like no one wanted it as much as he did…like no one cared as much as he did…like no one was trying as hard as he was…like they weren’t “getting” it.  It was as if all of the one-on-one conversations, the lengthy and painstaking emails, the meetings before the meetings, the sometimes long and arduous group meetings, the meetings after the meetings, and the conversations that felt a lot like therapy sessions had finally all come together to form that perfect moment.

Whoosh

The team, a group of unique, capable, passionate, creative, intelligent, professional individuals came together, worked with each other, to create and launch a plan towards an end goal that they all want.

Whoosh

The energy level in the room picks up, and you can feel the excitement, the forward progress is evident, the enthusiasm is palpable, and success is underway!  People start smiling, they sit a little straighter, they hold their heads a little higher, they tackle things that days ago would have been too daunting, they uncover brilliant ideas, and they piece together elegant solutions.

Like a breath of air…fresh, fresh air.

Whoosh

I would posit that some teams are able to achieve that kind of flow on a regular basis.

I would also argue that this sort of synergy takes deliberate effort on everyone’s part to create, to foster, to build, to nurture, to protect.

Sometimes, I’m afraid it’s fleeting. Just as in many other areas of our lives, mountaintop experiences don’t last all day every day. And there are valleys.

But, I would argue, it’s absolutely worth it.

All of the coaching and training, and all the cajoling and prodding, and the preparing and leading, and the motivating and inspiring, and the modeling and even the fervent hoping, it’s all worth it if, at the end of the day you can have that “whoosh“, even for a moment…when you know that everyone is laser-focused on giving their all, their very best, to achieve a common goal.

Try these prompts to get you going:

1 – When was the last time you felt the “whoosh“ with your team?

2 – What can you do today to create new “whoosh“?

Here’s to the “whoosh“!
